Tips to Consider When Buying a Model Aircraft

by R. Keong

Buying a Model Plane Graphic
Had you thought of buying model aircraft as gifts for people working or retired from the services?  They are very collectible and enjoyed by people interested in aviation history and technology.

Accuracy of detail is important when buying model aircraft as pilots and aircraft technicians will know and love the aircraft they have flown and those they would love to have flown.  The detail of all the accessories is also really important in terms of the good quality of model aircraft.

Anyone who is into buying model aircrafts will love the opportunity to show them off and talk about them.  Someone who is into buying model aircrafts will be passionate about their collection, about flying, and the lives of the pilots and people who flew in them.

High quality and collectable model aircraft are mostly made of wood.  The very best are hand carved from wonderful mahogany or similar hard woods, and then hand painted with precision to become a high standard miniature version of the real thing. Generally, most of the wooden made model aircrafts will have a varnish finish, which means they are easy to keep clean with a duster or damp cloth. Depending on the finish some of them will benefit from a liquid wax to give a depth of shine.

Choosing the Right Models

When buying model aircraft reflecting the early days (i.e. early century) of flight, you will probably find frame built models hand built from carved pieces, and with canvass stretched over the frame. This type of models of early planes will be hand painted and a careful dusting with a feather duster or dry cloth will keep the models looking pristine.  In general, these models are less sturdy than many others, and should be kept away from clumsy fingers.  The owners of this type of model aircrafts often like to suspend the model with light wire from the ceiling.

Besides wooden made model aircrafts, there are also less expensive plastic models available for modelplane enthusiasts and collectors.  These plastic model aircrafts will more likely be of more recently operational planes and will be very detailed and clearly finished (i.e. as they are likely to be made mainly by machinery).  However, as they are plastic they must be kept out of direct sunlight, and if possible in a display case.

When you are buying model aircrafts you will also see the type of models that made of chrome plated metal and other materials. If you are considering buying one of these model aircrafts, it is worth doing some research priory to ensure the models are accurate in their representation, and to find how they are made, and of course their relative prices and values.

So when you are buying model aircrafts for someone, you will need to choose the models that will be truly appreciated. Basically, buying model aircrafts for a war veteran and for a young aspiring commercial pilot will require different approaches and taste.

As with everything, its best to do your research well to ensure that when buying model aircrafts you are able to buy the most beautiful and accurate model for the price you can afford.
